Mackintosh Art Lovers Side Chair by Bruce Hamilton
In 1901, Charles Rennie Mackintosh entered a competition organized by the German magazine Zeitschrift für Innendekoration to design a “Haus eines Kunstfreundes,” or House for an Art Lover. Although the house was not built during Mackintosh’s lifetime, the drawings later became the basis for the House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, completed in the 1990s.
In 1995, Bruce Hamilton Furniture Makers were commissioned to create the dining room furniture for the project. The Art Lovers chairs offered today are handmade in Glasgow using the same jigs and templates developed for that original commission.
Made in European oak, the chair features Mackintosh’s distinctive high back, hand-cut stencil artwork on the head rail and back slat, and a hand-woven seagrass seat. Available in dark oak or golden oak, it is a rare made-to-order piece with a direct connection to one of Mackintosh’s most important interior designs.
Hand-made by Bruce Hamilton in Glasgow, Scotland.
