Gerrit Rietveld Berlin Chair
After the Red-Blue Chair, the Berlin Chair is one of Gerrit Rietveldâs most iconic works. He designed the Berlin Chair for the 1923 âJuryfreie Kunstschauâ in Berlin. As only the original scale model of the chair survives, it is unclear whether the chair was actually exhibited as a furniture piece at the time. In 1960, Rietveld designed two new versions of the chair for the boardroom of the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. A cushion was added to the second version and the chairmanâs chair had a higher back.
Rietveld's Berlin Chair is made of solid oak or beech panels, which are varnished in such a way that the structure of the wood remains visible.
