Michael Thonet No. 56 Bentwood Chair by Ton

The No. 56 Bentwood Chair by Ton is a fine example of Michael Thonet's approach in manufacturing.  His approach in using pre-prepared molds, uniform veneers, and mechanical procedures allowed him to create the A56 Bentwood Chair, but also use many of the same parts from this chair in other bentwood designs.

In 1853 Michael Thonet founded the Gebruder Thonet Company (Thonet Brothers).  He transferred the ownership of the bentwood furniture company to his five sons.  He was just 57 at the time, and remained very active in the company, and retained full control.  This inclusion of his sons in the ownership allowed for their expertise of business and craftsmanship to be fully integrated into the organization.  This key moment in the company’s history fueled spectacular growth and design for years to come.

The No. 56 Bentwood Chair is very popular in Europe and America for both residential and commercial applications.
